It is the far future and after mankind has screwed up the Earth, mankind chooses to put all governing functions in the hands of a Mother computer.

This is the general backdrop for the movie Toward the Terra. Deviant behavior, such as being an esper [psychic] are met with force.

Featured is the most talented esper to have ever existed, a young boy named Jomy, and his struggle to lead an entire culture of espers back home... to Terra.

Not a bad story, but it is a bit space operaish. The style reminded me a lot of They were 11 and Galaxy Express 999.

This is one of the oldest pieces of Anime which can be acquired. The original story has a copyright of 1980, which places it before the original Macross or Robotech series.

A very good resources on the history of Anime can be found in a book by Frederik L. Schodt called Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics [ISBN: 4-7700-1252-7]. In this book, Schodt makes reference to a manga named Terra e, which ran in 1977. From this manga, the Anime Toward the Terra was developed.
